Utility Tunnel Expansion Project Bethesda, MD

Construction Cost: $35 million

Services included project management, inspections, estimating, scheduling, contract administration, change order analysis/preparation, contractor proposal analysis, progress meetings coordination, and contract files maintenance. The construction work consisted of the construction of 1.5 miles of utility tunnel and trenches, and associated valve vaults areas, at the NIH Bethesda campus (16 different phases). New utilities included: 36” chilled water supply and return piping, 12” high pressure steam, 2” high pressure steam condensate, 16” domestic water piping, several 20-way and 24-way electrical ductbanks, 15” sanitary lines, 20” through 48” system lines. All related valves and associated manholes for the mechanical systems were also included. Coordination with campus activities and NIH departments were critical, utilities shut downs and road closures had to be properly scheduled as to not interfere with research activities while maintaining the project completion date on schedule.

Construction Cost: Phase I: $4 million

Full construction management services for the construction of an electrical substation. CGI was involved during phase 1, which consisted of the base building construction. The scope of work included site work, site utilities (8” sanitary line and 6 associated manholes, and 8” domestic water line), heavy concrete work, footings, primary and secondary electrical ductbanks and associated manholes, retaining/building/ CMU and brick masonry walls, transformer bays, cable vaults, and roofing system. It will house three 38-15 Kva transformers and associated switch gear equipment to provide power to several NIH buildings. Phase 2 of the project consisted of the design, procurement and installation of the electrical equipment.

Bldg 11, Power Plant East Expansion

Construction Cost: Phase I: $4 million

Full construction management services for the expansion of a power plant. CGI was involved in the excavation and support of excavation phase of the project. Ground water and rock were among the problems encountered during the excavation phase. Installation of an underground drain system to dewater the site and rock removal methods was a part of the scope of work. The building when completed will house two 5,000 tons chillers and associated cooling towers and electrical components.
